My name is Seth Sims. Im 30 years old and Im a local glassblower who was born and raised in Boise Idaho. I started blowing glass in 2017. I have been independently running my own small business in 2020 after completing an apprenticeship under a Walt Disney glassblower. I never thought I would have the opportunity to make art for a living or even considered myself to be an artist, despite always doing art work from a young age. I would paint or draw, play with clay or some other medium all through grade school and high school. But I didn’t find a medium that sparked the innate drive to create until I found glass Art.
When I was younger I would fantasize about combining my artwork along with my entrepreneurial talents. Growing up with low income to a single mom I always had to found a way to generate my own income. I would either mow lawns or paint address numbers on the curb for a few dollars, and that always allowed me to work for myself even if It wasn’t a glorifying job. I also knew from personal experience it was practically impossible to sell an original painting and still make more than minimum wage. Which wasn’t very inspiring to the entrepreneur inside of me.
It wasn’t until I discovered glass that I was able to integrate my entrepreneurial identity into my artistic nature. I saw first hand how a master can use speed and efficiency to make a piece of art. As glass flows from hot honey to a frozen crystal state and it freezes in place, all within minutes. The vision immediately came together, and I saw myself using this new found medium to create unique objects and the local community immediately rallied behind me supporting my work and telling local stores about the new up and coming glassblower.
There’s nothing that would ever convince me to give up my identity as a glassblower. The ups and downs since 2020, the highs and lows since 2017. Glass has given me an identity I never thought I could achieve. I live, eat, sleep, drink, and blow glass.
